Bio-remediation uses naturally occurring bacteria to break down these potential pollutants, decreasing he need for physical maintenance and reducing the associated environmental impact.  This can only be undertaken if you want to commit to a non-chemical cleaning regime for every area that feeds into the drainage system in question.
