Background information - cesspits, or wet wells
A cesspit, or wet well as it is termed in Wales, is a sealed tank for the reception and temporary storage of sewage. Because it is sealed, the tank must be emptied frequently — in many cases as often as weekly.
Background information - septic tanks
A septic tank is a key component of a septic system, effectively a small-scale sewage treatment system with no connection to main sewage pipes. They are "septic" because an anaerobic bacterial environment develops in the tank, and the bacteria act to decompose or mineralise the waste discharged into them. Typically, the partially treated liquid elements separated from the solids are dispersed into the ground via perforated pipes - a soakaway.
A properly maintained system can last for decades.
