Waterflow Build Bridge

Over the Christmas break Waterflow undertook an important bridge replacement project, part of one of the early phases of work in preparation for the 2012 Olympics at Stratford.

In a normal location this job would have been relatively straightforward comprising the demolition of the existing steel and concrete bridge and replacement with a new steel framed concrete decked twin span bridge.

However this project was far from normal as the bridge was located over an existing railway track in a 9m wide corridor running between a complex glass station building and the operational tracks of the Central Line. The operations continued 24hrs a day during the nine-day rail blockade affecting a section of the line beneath the bridge. A normal service was operating on the adjacent Central Line (in places less than 1m away). Cranes could not be used due to risks to trains, potential high winds and programme constraints therefore a complex roller launched gantry system was constructed to enable the installation of a cantilevered runway beam system.

Within an incredibly tight 5-week programme the 60m long 90 tonne gantry was designed, approved and constructed in time to be pulled into place across the 22m main span. This was the first time this type of gantry had ever been launched in Europe. Despite the requirement for additional strengthening works on the old support structures the £1.3m project was delivered 24 hours ahead of programme.
